So, the important question. What is being fit?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), physical fitness is defined as 'the ability to carry out daily tasks with vigour and alertness, without undue fatigue, and with ample energy to enjoy leisure-time pursuits and respond to emergencies.'
It gave eight components of fitness.
- Cardiorespiratory endurance
- Muscular endurance
- Muscular strength
- Muscular power
- Body composition

I think I vary from being above average to good in the first seven components but poor in body composition. Body composition is the amount of fat on the body.
I am neglecting to stay fit for so long. I used to go to the gym but I could not do that continuously because of my travelling to hometown frequently. After coming back, it used to take three to four days to get back to the normal fitness routine. At the time of this writing, I was in my home for almost two months because of Covid-19 lockdown.
I coded almost every day but worked out only for five days. I thought about this and I have figured out three interlinked things that are stopping me from being fit.
Using phone before sleep
A lot of research has gone into studying the effects of blue light from devices on sleep. Almost all of them agreed that blue light triggers the neurons as if it's daylight and keeps the brain awake for longer durations thus increasing the time to fall asleep. Playing games or watching YouTube is my usual ritual before sleep.
Varying wakeup times
As a result of varying sleeping times, my wakeup times were never consistent for longer periods. If I don't get enough sleep, I used to skip the gym that day and sleep longer so that I wouldn't feel fatigued at work.
Breaking continuity on weekends and holidays
This is my another finding. If I take a break on the weekends - neither going to gym nor playing an outdoor game - the continuity is lost and I had to put more effort on Monday to wake up on time and go to the gym. Sometimes, I used to skip on Mondays too.
So, what am I thinking to do
I have to rethink about the fitness routine. If it is something very important, I should make it my top priority every day. I should be very disciplined in carolic intake, sleep times and exercising every day. That is like the highest goal I need to achieve. I will first setup short goals and will post about the journey.
If we are not healthy enough to wake up, perform and be productive for the maximum amount of time in a day, what can we achieve by being weak?
